Young Quakers

“Rejoice in the presence of children and young people in your meeting,
and recognise the gifts they bring..."

Advices & Queries 1:19

What draws Young People to Quakerism? *

1. It's an LGBTQIA+ affirming spiritual community

  • Many young people discover us as a welcoming alternative after experiencing exclusion and bigotry in other religious settings.
  • Quakers are one of very few religious societies to celebrate same-sex marriages (and you'll often find them at Pride events!)

2. Quakers have a long history of activism

  • You'll encounter Quakers at the heart of many movements for climate justice, human rights and disarmament.
  • Quaker communities support their Young Adults to act according to their conscience, including through non-violent direct action when called for.

3. We're all looking for something deeper...

  • In an age of digital overload and global metacrisis, the silence of a Quaker Meeting is a peaceful sanctuary.
  • It's a space where people can meditate, pray, reflect, connect and just be.
  • It's somewhere people can find spiritual comfort, inspiration and guidance, without dogma.
  • People can find their own spiritual paths, and also find community.

4. Young Quaker communities and events

  • Young Friends General Meeting (YFGM) is the national community for Young Friends. They organise huge meet-up weekends three times a year in various UK locations.
  • Friends Southern Summer Events (FSSE) run two, week-long residential events each year for young people: Junior Gathering for ages 11-14, and Senior Conference for ages 15-18.
  • London Teenage Quaker Meeting empowers young Quakers to develop their friendships; explore Quaker values; and put Quaker ideals into practice to create an egalitarian, safe, inclusive, caring and positive atmosphere. They also run regular group excursions.
  • London Preteen Quaker Meeting hosts chats, crafts, games and a bit of worship with Quaker and Quaker-curious preteens (aged 10-14). Open to all in London and beyond!
