The Quaker Testimonies

The Quaker Testimonies (the STEPS)

We don't have a fixed creed because we have found that the search for truth can lead us to new expressions of values as well as confirming existing ones. We call these values 'testimonies'.

In Britain, the Quaker testimonies can be expressed using the acronym 'STEPS'.

Simplicity - Quakers tend to live simply, but we are not rigidly puritanical. For example, some Friends are teetotal, while others drink alcohol in moderation.

Truth - Quakers recognise only one standard of truth, and consequently do not swear legal oaths. This attitude is also reflected in our avoidance of speculative business deals and gambling.

Equality - Quakers do not practise or condone discrimination by sex, social class, race, gender or sexual identity. We believe there is "that of God" in everyone, regardless of outward appearances and actions.

Peace - The Quaker way implies non-violence in thought, word and deed. Most Quakers refuse to fight in war, and make clear our opposition to all preparations for it. The Society is regarded as one of the traditional 'Peace Churches'.

Sustainability - Quakers believe in the importance of minimising environmental harms caused by overconsumption and wastefulness. We are proponents of "reduce, recycle, reuse".
